About Moullinex △ GPU Panic

What started with ‘Luz’, a joint track that opened the door and led the way for Moullinex △ GPU Panic to continue thriving, both individually and in ensemble, has since morphed into a partnership that this year will hit new creative heights. The △ in the name of their new project, a nod to the triangular structure with which they use as part of their new live performances as a duo. 2023 will mark the return to a creative relationship that keeps on giving seeing as GPU Panic is already a central presence on much of Moullinex’ recent output, notably with him being lead vocalist on Moullinex’s newest studio album ‘Requiem for Empathy’ released to huge acclaim. Just like they were then, as are they now, GPU Panic’s contributions are constantly manifested on beautiful songs that make you dance, daydream, and simultaneously cut to your core.

Moullinex thrives in intersections: science and art, spontaneity, and formalism, organic and artificial, isolation and community. This idea crystallised in music that can perfectly live within the boundaries of the dancefloor and still allow for deep introspection on headphones. From melancholic electronic textures to exuberant house and disco, his productions have seen him being praised by his peers and audiences globally.

Luis Clara Gomes (Moullinex) spent his formative years looking at the stars. From drawing galactic maps and sketches of imaginary spacecraft as a child to doing research in astronomy as an adult, his obsession with science was the stepping stone into electronic music, where he first stumbled into electronic soundtrack maestros such as Vangelis and Giorgio Moroder and later Air, Stevie Wonder and Brazilian MPB. Under the Moullinex alias he first started doing remixes for Cut Copy, Sebastien Tellier, Royksopp and Robyn, among many more, while consistently releasing quality originals through his own label Discotexas, alongside Xinobi, his partner in crime. Four albums have ensued, ‘Flora’, ‘Elsewhere’, ‘Hypersex’, and ‘Requiem for Empathy’, which further establishes Moullinex as a versatile, subtle, and multi-layered producer.

‘Requiem for Empathy’, released in 2021, is a collaboration heavy album that saw support from Pete Tong at BBC Radio 1 (UK), Nemone at BBC 6music (UK) and many more, including countless online outlets (KALTBLUT, The Fader, Mixmag, DJ Mag, Dezeen to name a few), all rightfully heaping on their much-deserved love. One of the said collaborators on the album was GPU Panic, a pivotal voice on four songs on an album that also spawned the Live at Eléctrico EP. Since then, Moullinex also found the time to collaborate with harpist Angélica Salvi. With the introduction of strings to his music hinting at what was about to come with ‘See Me Burn’, and equally as essential, signalling the return of GPU Panic to the Moullinex fold. It all transpired into a track with the enigmatic, and at times hypnotic, string arrangement creating a beautiful contrast with the electronica club-focused rhythm section, colliding with GPU Panic’s staggering vocal and sentiment to dramatic effect.

From there on out, the collaborations between the two have only increased, and to brilliant effect. Originally released in January 2022, ‘See Me Burn’ marked a deepening in the artistic symbiosis between Moullinex & GPU Panic and an on-going working relationship that kept on giving. The track gave way to a remix from the rapidly rising Yulia Niko and within two months, new music surfaced in the form of the club centric ‘Higher’, and the more cinematic ‘Pacifico’.

Moullinex rounded out 2022, with among other releases, his debut on Damian Lazarus’ label Crosstown Rebels with ‘A Fistful of Stars’, and his biggest domestic show to date as he presented DISCODRAMA at Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon over six unforgettable hours. Since emerging with his debut EP ‘Sand Haze’, GPU Panic, (moniker of Guilherme Tomé Ribeiro), output has been constant to say the least. His most recent original studio release was ‘Glimpse of Me’, which included a ‘Moullinex Reburn’ and Anja Schneider Remix, which emerged off the back singles such as ‘Mirror’, ‘Flores’ and ‘Just Go’ and have gone on to form the core of his recent work, proving a lush sonic selection that will continue to capture an ever-growing audience.

His increased exposure has only enhanced his growing reputation, one which GPU Panic has begun to cultivate on his own terms with high profile mentions for his previous work appearing in print as well as online on such sites as the influential Tsugi (France), with his live show attracting attention and receiving glowing reviews from sites including Deep House Amsterdam, and leading Mixmag to hail it as “an utterly bewitching live act”. He also found time to release the ‘Wrong Club’ EP on Berlin based label Get Physical, also featuring on their latest compilation ‘Detroit Gets Physical Vol.1’, garnering a place in Beatport’s Deep House Chart top 20 in the process.

That growing exposure has been one that GPU Panic has begun to cultivate on his own terms. 2022 ended with the release of new single ‘Rome Avenue’ and now his journey and musical path has once again perfectly coincided with that of Moullinex.

2023 is shaping up to another very prolific year of collaboration for Moullinex △ GPU Panic, as they embark on a debut full tour as a duo, following up on the promise of their first thrilling show at London’s Jazz Cafe recently, armed with a catalogue of tracks between them and an unwavering willingness to play them out to live audiences. This year will undoubtedly hold some surprises, soon to be revealed, as the two continue work on a joint project at their shared studio headquarters in Lisbon.
